Eloqua Progressive Profiling 1: What is it?

Aug 23, 2023

Most clients I have ask me how they can quickly start doing Eloqua progressive profiling on their Eloqua landing pages.  I hear you ask why?  Easy, the Eloqua progressive profiling module is pony (pony is a slang UK English word for rubbish – fun fact for your day).  When an Eloqua landing loads, provided the user has the Eloqua cookie set, their contact (and/or custom object data) will prepopulate which means with a few handy scripts you can turn your marketing form with lots of prepopulated fields into something really slick using my Eloqua progressive profiling tutorials.

I like to break Eloqua form questions down into into three parts. These are email address, standard personal fields, company and interest fields.  here is a fourth part which is custom fields that are not integrated with your CRM and possibly don’t exist in Eloqua – there is a separate tutorial I have written for this you can check it out here.

Buckle up buckeroos, read this first part so we are both on the same page when it comes to what I mean when we go through Eloqua progressive profiling together.

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing, understanding your customers and capturing valuable data is essential for crafting personalized and impactful marketing strategies. One of the strategic techniques that has gained traction in recent years is Eloqua progressive profiling, a method that optimizes the process of gathering information from users while minimizing friction and enhancing their overall experience.

Defining Eloqua progressive Profiling

Eloqua progressive profiling is a strategy employed in online forms that aims to gradually collect information about users over multiple interactions. Unlike traditional forms that ask for a plethora of details all at once, Eloqua progressive profiling employs a more strategic approach. In this approach, initial interactions only ask for a limited set of essential information, allowing users to engage with the form quickly and effortlessly. Subsequent interactions, occurring over time, collect additional details as users return to engage with your brand, content, or services.

Benefits of Eloqua progressive Profiling
  1. Enhanced User Experience: Traditional forms can be intimidating and time-consuming, leading to user frustration and potential abandonment. Eloqua progressive profiling alleviates this by making the interaction feel less intrusive and more personalized. By requesting minimal information initially, users are more likely to engage and continue the process at their convenience.
  2. Higher Conversion Rates: The reduced cognitive load of Eloqua progressive profiling leads to higher completion rates. As users become familiar with your brand and content, they are more likely to provide additional information in subsequent interactions. This gradual approach can lead to better conversion rates compared to overwhelming users with a long list of questions upfront.
  3. Accurate and Reliable Data: Users are more likely to provide accurate and reliable information when they perceive value in doing so. Eloqua progressive profiling ensures that users see the relevance of the information they’re sharing, leading to more accurate data collection. This accurate data forms the foundation for effective segmentation and targeting.
  4. Personalization Opportunities: As you gather more information about users over time, you can tailor your marketing efforts to their preferences, behavior, and needs. This allows for highly targeted and relevant content delivery, fostering stronger customer relationships.
  5. Long-Term Engagement: Eloqua progressive profiling encourages users to return and engage with your brand on an ongoing basis. This sustained interaction helps build trust and loyalty, potentially leading to more significant conversions or purchases.

Implementing Eloqua progressive profiling

To successfully implement Eloqua progressive profiling, consider the following steps:

  1. Identify Critical Information: Determine the key information you need from users to achieve your marketing goals. This could include demographic data, interests, buying preferences, or pain points.
  2. Create a Series of Forms: Divide the information into multiple logical steps or interactions. Each step should ask for a limited number of fields, keeping the process simple and quick.
  3. Prioritize Fields: Prioritize the fields based on their importance. Fields that are more critical for your marketing efforts should appear earlier in the Eloqua progressive profiling sequence.
  4. Utilize Cookies and CRM Integration: To facilitate the gradual data collection process, use cookies to remember users and the information they’ve previously provided. Integration with a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system can help centralize and manage collected data effectively.
  5. Deliver Value: At each interaction, offer value to the user. This could be in the form of content, offers, or access to exclusive features. The value exchange encourages users to continue engaging.
  6. Monitor and Optimize: Continuously monitor user behavior and engagement. Adjust your Eloqua progressive profiling strategy based on user responses and preferences.
